  • SOHO Transforms Lives

Space of Her Own, Inc. (SOHO) is an award-winning 501 (c) (3) charitable organization committed to helping girls avoid delinquency, live healthfully, communicate openly, progress academically and give back to others in order to lead fulfilling lives. Three girls’ programs operate from Alexandria and Arlington, VA. Each program supports 12 youth.

The SOHO Clubs, one for girls and one for boys, provide activities and services to SOHO youth and their mentors throughout their middle school years, in order to promote long-term mentoring relationships and ongoing learning opportunities

    Art as a Catalyst

SOHO is designed to teach girls to value creativity using unique visual arts and carpentry instruction. Girls learn to see the arts as a means of expression and an endeavor at which all can succeed.

    Positive Female Role Models

SOHO recruits and trains outstanding adult mentors who reinforce the social skills development of SOHO girls. Mentors discuss life skills lessons with their mentees at the beginning of each weekly session and engage with them as they work on creative visual arts, carpentry and design projects. We ask the mentors who work with our program to be friends and guides for their mentees, inspiring SOHO girls to become the best they can be.

    More than Mentoring

SOHO is more than a mentoring program. Our unique partnership with Alexandria’s 18th District Juvenile & Domestic Relations Court Service Unit, public schools in Alexandria and Arlington, social workers and other community partners allows us to provide specialized social services and make needed referrals to community resources for the SOHO girls and their families.

    SOHO Reaches Youth in Need

In the following video, Space of Her Own, Inc. founder and Executive Director Linda Odell describes the volunteerism of the trained professionals who mentor with SOHO.

  • SOHO’s unique approach to one-on-one mentoring also includes:

    * Engaging youth in community service projects. SOHO girls gain greater exposure to the importance of community involvement. Community service projects address issues such as hunger, health and housing, and have included fundraising for local youth organizations, volunteering at the animal shelter and creating holiday cards for residents at the Alexandria Carpenter’s Shelter.

    * Building healthy eating habits for program participants. SOHO girls learn about portion control, dinner etiquette and nutritious meal options.

    * Designing and remodeling each girl's room. Mentors and mentees work with family and friends to redecorate the child’s bedroom or sleeping space using crafts and carpentry projects created at SOHO. Many of SOHO’s participants live in poorly furnished and overcrowded housing. Room renovations guarantee girls a well-lit personal space with a comfortable mattress, fresh bedding and an organized space to do homework. With each renovated space, a young girl gains new skills, confidence and a reminder of her accomplishments through the hands-on experience of planning and redesigning her room.
