AmeriCorps VISTA Volunteer Position with SOHO

SOHO-Space of Her Own, Inc, The City of Alexandria's juvenile Court Service Unit and the Virginia Mentoring Partnership seek one highly compassionate, motivated, charismatic, organized and technologically savvy individual to support mentor recruitment efforts in Alexandria, Virginia.

AmeriCorps VISTA is the national service program designed specifically to fight poverty. VISTA has been on the front lines in the fight against poverty in America for more than 45 years.

SOHO-Space of Her Own provides yearlong one-to-one creative mentorship to preteen children from low-income, fragile and fragmented homes. Through weekly meetings, SOHO engages youth and mentors in life skill-building activities, visual arts and carpentry classes, healthful dinners and meaningful service projects. SOHO fosters long-term mentoring relationships and culminates in the renovation of each participant's bedroom.

Qualifications: Undergraduate degree encouraged; applicants should be enthusiastic, committed to the ethic of service and interested in serving in Alexandria, Virginia. Qualities sought include good organizational skills; computer proficiency and the ability to develop a blog, update website, Facebook & Twitter, create newsletters and brochures, enhance and maintain databases and create a short documentary about the SOHO and the value of mentoring; outstanding communication and writing skills; ability to work with others from a diverse background; possessing self-initiative and past experience in volunteering and/or within the nonprofit sector.

Benefits of AmeriCorpsVISTA Service: The Alexandria VISTA member is paid $15,994 annual stipend with a $5,500 education award or a $1500 cash stipend of appreciation presented at the end of a year of service. The VISTA position is yearlong, with a possibility of 2nd and 3rd year extensions. All compensation is provided by the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). HEALTH CARE, child care, life insurance and some relocation expenses are all available as well as intensive training through CNCS (all expenses paid) and by the Virginia Mentoring Partnership. In partnership with the City of Alexandria and the Juvenile Court Service Unit's crime prevention programs, the selected VISTA will become familiar with all aspects of the juvenile court, City-wide social service providers and mentoring programs, and participate in crime prevention and other City training. The VISTA member will gain the knowledge and skills necessary to effectively recruit, screen, train and retain 36 high quality and diverse mentors to serve Alexandria's SOHO programs.

The target date for hiring is July 1, 2013. Required pre-service training, paid in full by CNCS, is scheduled for August 19 through August 22.
